Handspring ventures into wireless arena, 10^th Aug – Handheld computer manufacturers Handspring announced that they would license Qualcomm’s CDMA standard to develop new range of wireless communication devices

Merger between Phone.com and Software.com

10^th Aug. – The merger will be largest amongst internet companies and will combine Phone.com's expertise in wireless internet software with Software.com's strength in software for traditional wire-based telephony.

IPO plans for Symbian

9^th Aug. – Psion the largest shareholder in Symbian announced its plans for initial IPO of Symbian, which licenses its EPOC operating system for wireless devices.
